In the locality of Alájar we find la Peña of Arias Montano, a superb watchtower of the Sierra of Huelva. It is the "flag ship" from this village which also underlines by its quiet streets and its admirable neighbourhoods. It is the starting point of several ways and where we can accomplish many activities and adventures. In addition there are some restaurants, where we can cost the best products of the zone.
Alájar is in the Northern of the province, in the Natural Park Sierra of Aracena and Picos de Aroche, to 102 kilometers of Huelva and 12 of Aracena. Extension: 41 kilometers square. Altitude above sea level: 574 meters. Population: 821 (2006).
As in the finding of the Sillita of the King there are evidences of the presence of the Romans and Muslims (the name of the town, Alájar "the stone" is of Arab origin). In the 13th century this zone is conquered by the Christians and belons to Aracena until 1700, in which Alájar becomes independent. At the end of the 16th century, Benito Aryan Montano, advisor of King Felipe II and publisher of the Bible Polyglot of Amberes, that "lends" its name to la Peña the arrives at Alájar.
In the 20th century, the commerce, agriculture and livestock have been the sustenance of Alájar, that has been become depopulated.
To the municipality of Alájar belongs also the villages of Madroñeros, Collao, Cabezuelos and Calabacino. |
